Pathfinder Pathways is built around a simple principle: every player deserves an opportunity to develop, but placement at our highest competitive levels must be earned.

Enrollment in Pathfinder Pathways is not a pay-to-play guarantee of placement on an MLS NEXT team, Xavier's top high school team, or any other specific roster.

Players are evaluated based on their current ability, development potential, attitude, effort, commitment, and performance. They are then placed in the environment we believe is appropriate for their current stage of development.

As players improve, they can earn opportunities to move into more competitive environments. Likewise, placement is not permanent. A player's level may change—up or down—based on development, performance, effort, attitude, roster needs, and coaching evaluation.

Pathfinder Pathways provides the pathway. The player earns his place within it.

A Development System
Not a Team Placement

One of the advantages of Pathfinder Pathways is that our soccer offering is not built around one roster or one competitive level.

Through Vale SC, Xavier High School, XG Sports, and our broader soccer relationships, we can work with players at different stages of their development.

Our objective is to answer three questions for every player:

Where are you now? We evaluate the player's current technical, tactical, physical, cognitive, and competitive level.

Where can you go? We identify realistic short- and long-term development opportunities based on the player's ability and aspirations.

What do you need to do to get there? We create an environment that challenges the player to improve and provides opportunities to earn advancement.

Development is rarely a straight line. Players mature at different rates, and the environment that is right for a player today may not be the environment that is right six or twelve months from now….. That's why we call it a pathway.

Movement Works Both Ways

Pathfinder Pathways is intentionally a merit-based environment.

Players who demonstrate that they are ready for a greater challenge may earn opportunities to move upward.

Players may also move to a different competitive environment if their performance, effort, attitude, development, or the needs of the team indicate that another placement would be more appropriate.

This is not intended as punishment.
It is part of operating an authentic competitive development environment.

At higher levels of sport, players continually earn their opportunities through what they demonstrate in training and competition. Learning to respond positively to evaluation, competition, success, disappointment, and adversity is itself an important part of player development.

Training and Playing are Different

A key element of our philosophy is recognizing that a player's development environment and competitive placement do not always have to be identical.

Where appropriate, a developing player may have opportunities to train, receive individual development, or be exposed to higher-level environments while continuing to compete at the level where coaches believe the player will develop most effectively.

Exposure to a higher level should not be confused with guaranteed roster placement.

The objective is development—not simply attaching a player to a particular team name.

For players capable of competing at the highest levels available within our environment, opportunities may exist to pursue elite pathways, including MLS NEXT-level soccer.

These opportunities are significant—but they are earned opportunities, not purchased benefits of Pathfinder Pathways enrollment.

A player entering Pathfinder Pathways at another competitive level can aspire to move upward.

That movement will depend on factors including:

Technical ability
Tactical understanding
Athletic development
Training performance
Game performance
Coachability
Attitude
Work ethic
Consistency
Team needs and roster availability

There is no predetermined timetable for advancement.

For some players, movement may happen quickly. For others, the appropriate development path may require more time.

And for some players, the best long-term pathway may ultimately be a different competitive level.

Our responsibility is to be honest about where the player stands while providing the environment and opportunity to improve.

Vale SC

A Competitive Pathway for Different Levels of Player

Vale SC provides the primary club soccer environment available to Pathfinder Pathways players.

Vale's broader soccer structure is designed to provide competitive environments for players at different stages of development rather than treating every player as though they belong at the same level.
Depending on age, ability, roster availability, and evaluation, Vale's broader development landscape includes opportunities ranging from developmental and regional competition through increasingly competitive EDP environments, elite development programs, and higher-level competitive pathways.

The philosophy is player-centered: find an environment that challenges the player appropriately and then provide opportunities to progress as development warrants.

Development Before Status

The objective is not simply to place a player on the team with the most prestigious name.

Playing at an appropriate level where a student trains meaningfully, competes, develops confidence, makes decisions under pressure, and earns opportunities can be significantly more valuable than being placed prematurely into an environment for which the player is not ready.

Coaches continually evaluate development and can recommend movement when appropriate.

Vale's Development Philosophy

The objective is to develop the person as well as the player.

Xavier High School Soccer

Students attending Xavier High School may also have the opportunity to pursue soccer through Xavier's high school program.

Xavier fields competitive high school soccer teams, providing students with the opportunity to represent their school while participating in the broader Xavier student experience.

Just as with Vale, however, enrollment at Xavier or participation in Pathfinder Pathways does not guarantee selection for a particular Xavier soccer team.

Team selection, roster placement, playing time, and advancement are determined by Xavier's coaching staff based on the player's ability, performance, attitude, team needs, and applicable school and athletic requirements.

For a student capable of earning a place at the highest level, Xavier can provide an outstanding combination of competitive high school soccer, rigorous academics, school identity, leadership, and community.

For students who do not initially earn the desired placement, Pathfinder Pathways will work to identify the most appropriate soccer and development environment available to them.

XG Sports Group

Develop the Individual Behind the Team Player

Team soccer is only one part of player development.

XG Sports provides the high-performance development environment that complements a player's team experience.

Where team training focuses heavily on preparing a group to compete together, the XG environment provides an opportunity to focus more deliberately on the needs of the individual athlete.

The performance environment can support areas such as:

Movement quality
Conditioning
Recovery
Injury-risk reduction
Technical development
Individual performance goals
Training habits and accountability

Programming can be coordinated with the player's soccer demands so that individual development supports rather than competes with team training and competition.

For students following the Bring Your Own School pathway, XG can become an especially important part of the student's daily performance environment, allowing academic flexibility to create additional opportunities for intentional development.

We cannot promise every player will reach MLS NEXT, become a Xavier varsity starter, play NCAA soccer, or become a professional player.

We can establish clear expectations for what every player controls.

Ability: Continue developing the technical, tactical, physical, and cognitive qualities required to compete.
Attitude: Be coachable, respectful, resilient, and willing to learn.
Effort: Train with purpose and demonstrate consistent commitment to improvement.
Accountability: Take responsibility for preparation, academics, recovery, behavior, and performance.
Character: Represent yourself, your teammates, your family, and the organizations within Pathfinder Pathways appropriately.

Talent can create an opportunity. What a player does with that opportunity determines where the pathway can lead.
